Experts say populations of shrimp are so low, the season may have to be cancelled altogether.
The consensus from the Fisheries Commission is that there will be some kind of shrimping season this year. But there are still a lot of things up in the air including how long the season will be and just how shrimpers be allowed to bring in.
At first the commission was proposing closing down the season all together, no shrimping at all. They pointed to their 2012 report, which they say shows there simply aren't enough shrimp and they aren't reproducing fast enough to replenish their populations to healthy levels.so far today the commission has agreed no moratorium, but instead a very limited season, which at this point may start in mid-January. Fisherman called the total loss of a season the absolute worst case scenario. And even though a short season with a limited catch is still a hardship they say something is better than nothing.
