Maine Housing admits it failed when it came to providing clean and safe housing to thousands of Mainers. As a result, it says it made changes in administration and policies to prevent that from happening again.
The worst conditions were in the town of Norway. A toilet with no handles, a tub with a wrench for a handle. They also found a bath tub with rust stains all over it and exposed electrical wires. All in all, more than 80% of unit inspections failed to meet sanitation standards last year. Housing authority officials say policy changes are in place to ensure that Mainers have access to safe and habitable housing.
Officials with the Maine State Housing Authority say they have implemented changes that will take them from a failing grade to a passing one. They say those changes are effective immediately.
As if the problems with living conditions in Maine housing's units aren't bad enough, the feds are revealing just how much the organization has been paying consultants.
