"I don't care where you go in this country. If you come from Maine you're looked down upon,"
That was Governor LePage announcing a public school reform package that includes expanding charter schools and school choice in Maine, improving teacher evaluations and putting more of a focus on technical training, among other things. Well now the superintendent of schools in Brunswick is taking public exception with the governor's agenda, and his tone.
In a district wide letter dated August 17th, Superintendent Paul Perzanoski writes, among other things: "The legislators passed new laws on bullying this spring, but they failed to include the Blaine House. Remediation is on the governor's mind and i agree, he needs remediation in civility, public speaking, telling the truth, diplomacy and following the law"
We tried to contact Perzanoski without success.
We did get a response from Adrienne Bennett, spokesperson for Governor LePage who called the letter defamatory, writing: "Mr. Perzanoski's comments were wildly inappropriate. Our education goals challenge the status quo and if school choice, improving teacher evaluations and focusing on technical education are threats to Mr. Perzanoski, he's in the wrong line of work."
