AUGUSTA (WGME) -- Governor Paul LePage is accused of yelling and swearing at a group of Independent lawmakers in a closed door meeting at the State House.
Last Tuesday, Independent, also called "Unenrolled," Representatives Ben Chipman (U-Portland), Jeffrey Evangelos (U-Friendship), and Joe Brooks (U-Winterport) met with Gov. LePage to talk about how to fix the budget, and how tome together, but instead, they ended up farther apart.
"Raising voices, and calling names, and storming out of the room," said Rep. Chipman.
That was just within the first few minutes of the meeting.
"He not only banged his hands on the table 2-3 times, but he got up and walked out a minute into the meeting," said Rep. Brooks. "He argued with me because he said that the school in my district, SAD 22, was loaded with idiots!"
The representatives say the governor got mad when they started talking to him about ways to balance the budget. Specifically, they were talking about rolling back tax cuts, and increasing the lodging tax.
"He saw that as a tax increase and just raised his hands up, got really animated got really upset about it, and the reaction was I guess I was surprised about it," said Chipman.
After storming out, the governor came back in, and they continued their discussion. However, Rep. Evangelos say their ideas were still not well received.
"I think moving forward, unless the governor gets more cooperative, moving forward is going to have to happen with overriding some vetoes."
"No one on our side, the three of us, raised voices, or were caught up in the emotions of the meeting, but he was," Rep. Brooks said.
Gov. LePage's office did not respond to News 13's request for comment.
