If you're looking for Pam Levere on a Wednesday morning, you can find her at one place, her Zumba class.
Pam Levere: "It keeps me coming. I can't make any excuse."
She's one of millions worldwide who have fallen in love with the Latin dance fitness program craze that has swept the globe.
Pam Levere: "I love the music. And, I love to dance."
But, last year the Zumba name took a blow when Alexis Wright, a former instructor, was accused of running a prostitution ring out of her own studio. Since then, other area instructors say, the program has been trying to separate the Zumba name from the scandal.
Jane Smith, Zumba instructor at Nataraja School of Yoga: "It's a sad commentary because that has nothing to do with Zumba or Zumba fitness and what this is all about... We have all just continued to go on with what we love, which is learning new dances and keeping our students happy."
Zumba instructors in Kennebunk say they want to take back the Zumba name from the scandal. Later this month, they're inviting everyone to come learn about the dance program.
Jane Smith: "We just want people to see that this is what really Zumba is all about. It is beneficial health-wise. And, not only is it beneficial health-wise, but we do try to do things for that community that will be positive as well."
Pam says she couldn't me more proud of the Zumba program or of Kennebunk. And, as long as the music keeps playing, she'll just keep on dancing.
The "Zumba Celebration" will be held on January 27th at the York Lodge in Kennebunk. Proceeds from the program will go the Center for Grieving Children. For more information, contact Joyce at 646-8684 or Judy at 251-8400.
