U.S. Marshals say they've caught a former Maine prosecutor who disappeared just hours after an appeals court upheld his child pornography convictions.
U.S. Marshals took 50-year-old James Cameron into custody in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday. Cameron had been on the run for nearly three weeks.
According to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service, investigators in Maine developed information that Cameron was in New Mexico. They contacted U.S. Marshals in that area, and after conducting surveillance, found Cameron at a Hastings Store in Albuquerque. He was taken into custody when he came out of a bathroom.
A source with the U.S. Marshals Service tells News 13 Cameron was found with the same car they believed he used to flee, but had removed the Maine license plates.
Marshals say Cameron was arrested without incident.
Cameron, a former Maine assistant attorney general, was convicted of Possession of Child Pornography in 2010 and sentenced to 16 years behind bars. However, he was released from federal prison pending a Federal Circuit Court appeal.
Last month, the appeals court upheld some of the convictions and vacated others, and ordered Cameron's case back to U.S. District Court in Maine for resentencing.
After that, U.S. Marshals say Cameron cut off his electronic monitoring device and fled from his home in Rome on November 14.
U.S. Marshals took Cameron to the Sandoval County Detention Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and booked for violating the conditions of his release. He will return to Maine after appearing in court in New Mexico.
No word on when that will happen.
