The firefighters are being taught 20 different ways to save. They'll have the chance to play both the rescuer *and* the victim. Those in the class say the training has really prepared them for emergencies.
Reg Verner, firefighter, New Brunswick, Canada: "It's a very progressive program. It teaches a lot of shore preparations, as well as rescue preparations. The new thing in the fire service is that it's the rescuer's safety fire and foremost. Before it was always the impacted people. This program really focuses on the safety of the rescuers and how to prepare themselves before they go in there."
Instructors say there are a few things you can do in order to prevent disaster if you venture out on the ice. First, make sure the ice is at least 5-inches thick to walk on. Also, have a whistle and picks ready to use just in case you fall through
