Food banks are opening and expanding, even in towns where you'd least expect them. The town of Cumberland is a nice coastal community, but even Maine's wealthiest towns have a serious need for food pantries.
The new Cumberland Community Food Bank opened this month at town hall. It looks like a grocery store, with plenty of canned goods but also fresh meats, breads, fruits, veggies, and even products like toothpaste and soap. Town councilor and food bank volunteer Tom Gruber says the response from customers has been overwhelming.
The food bank opened thanks to a lot of hard work from the town manager, town council, and dozens of volunteers like retired teacher Rosemary Gorinites. She says there are dozens of children in this town who go to bed hungry every night. And in this community, thanks to the food bank, there is a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
Cumberland says it is working very closely with local businesses, churches, and the food banks in neighboring towns to help make their food bank a success. It is open every Friday from 2 until 6 and people from Cumberland, North Yarmouth, New Gloucester, and Pownal are welcome.
