Mayor MacDonald recently said: I was speaking of my desire for immigrants to assimilate into the american way of life, not change who they are or leave their culture behind.
Somalis are demanding an apology while others are calling for mayor MacDonald's resignation. Dozens of protesters, most of them Somali immigrants, let their voices be heard at city hall in Lewiston.
Somalis living in Lewiston tell us they've heard enough out of Lewiston mayor Robert MacDonald. Now all they want to hear from the mayor is a sincere apology, something he seems reluctant to do.
Over 1400 people think a positive step would be for mayor MacDonald to resign. That's how many people signed this petition calling for the mayor's resignation.
We were put on a list of reporters who wanted to speak with mayor MacDonald. He did not get back with us and has said publicly he no longer wishes to discuss the matter.
Lewiston police told us protesters did not have a permit to demonstrate outside of city hall but protesters left so that was the end of it.
