TD Bank is sending letters to those customers that last March, six months ago, their name, address, bank account information, debit and credit card numbers, and even their social security numbers might be compromised. Those customers say they've lost a sense of security.
The TD Bank mishap actually happened more than six months ago, when backup computer tapes containing personal and confidential information from an unknown number of customers was lost. The tapes were being shipped from one bank location to another. TD Bank has been conducting an internal investigation these past six months, but those tapes have still not been found. What's worse, those customers now at risk of identity theft are only now finding out about it.
Lew Alessio says TD Bank had no right to keep this from him and the other customers whose confidential information is on those tapes.
A TD Bank spokesperson told me the bank decided to hold off notifying customers because of its internal investigation. The spokesperson told us there's never been a security breach or any evidence that any of this information was used inappropriately. In other words, no identities have been stolen and no credit cards charged. The spokesperson also told us that if you're a TD Bank customer and didn't receive a letter then you have nothing to worry about.
