We’ve learned that Cheverus High School and the Maine Principal's Association will meet on Monday, August 20th. According to our source, the MPA could ask Cheverus to give back its class a state championship from 2010.
It all involves then-Cheverus star Indiana Faithfull, who a judge has determined was ineligible some of the time he played at Cheverus. This Spring, a Cumberland County Superior Court judge lifted the temporary restraining order against Cheverus.
Faithfull, who transferred from Australia, was ruled ineligible to play in the final semester of his senior year. Faithful's family filed an injunction, and under the restraining order, he was allowed to play in the playoffs. The senior helped Cheverus roll to the class A state title.
Last year, the two sides went before the Maine Human Rights Commission to determine if this was an issue of discrimination. That commission was split 2-2, meaning no discrimination was found.
We spoke to both Cheverus High School and the MPA, but neither wanted to comment until after the meeting on the 20th. But according to sources, the MPA is prepared to ask Cheverus to relinquish the state title. That is what the MPA said they would do two years ago.
It’s unclear whether the 2010 title will be awarded to state runner up Edward Little. We'll have much more on this story as it continues to develop.
