The official motion to withdraw was filed at Cumberland County Court Tuesday. Defense attorney Dan Lilley says his client Mark Strong senior agrees to the motion and understands he may have to move forward in the trial representing himself.
I mean look at this stuff, defense attorney Dan Lilley says as he shows us a table full of evidence in the Kennebunk prostitution case.
Lilley: This case has taken on a life not familiar to most of us in Maine.
In a news conference Tuesday, Lilley said his client, accused pimp Mark Strong senior, is broke and that he has quote "no money whatsoever, not even to live on."
Lilley: He is essentially the forgotten middle class guy lass guy who neither qualifies for public aid nor has resources to fight the state the only way something can be done is if judge gets creative.
Lilley says the prosecution has pulled out all the stops, so without the money needed to hire experts and investigators, there is no way to build an adequate defense.
Lilley: I am trying to mount defense for a man destroyed by the very charges in a county in which everyone has opinion state that has brought behemoth against him and has resources.
Lilley says he took on the case when Strong was charged with one misdemeanor. Now Strong will stand trial on a 59-count indictment, accused of working with former Zumba instructor Alexis Wright to run a prostitution business out of her studio in Kennebunk. Both Strong and Wright have pleaded not guilty.
Lilley: And the bottom line is the person with the most money shouldnt prevail under our system.
The York County District Attorney's office says it will wait until the motion hearing on Friday to make any comment. The judge could order that Lilley stay on the case at which point the trial will begin on Tuesday.
