In Biddeford most people we talked to can't wait to say good bye and good riddance to the sights and smells of trash and the MERC plant. And see opportunity in the plan to buy and demolish it.
But some fear the new recycling and waste management plans will cost too much. Melissa Bednarowski, the lone council member to vote no the first time around agrees. She says the tax hike to pay for the plant might end up being more than originally thought. Plus the impact on jobs.
People who want to keep MERC open have been gathering signatures to do just that, or at least to give the people a voice in the matter.
The meeting and the final vote on the MERC plan is scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Biddeford Middle School. The city clerk tells the petition filed in protest of the plan doesn't even have half the signatures required to put the issue to a public referendum. She says the city council would have to move to table the vote in order to give that petition more time.
