leader of the Bangor community. He committed suicide last November after
learning that police were investigating him for sexually abusing
children. Now, eight months after his death, Maine State Police has
released the shocking details of that investigation.
The report
is 104 pages long. It does not name the victims or detail the abuse, but
what is clear is that police believe there are several victims and he
abused children over the course of 40 years.
Maine State Police
detectives interviewed several victims and several members of the Bangor
community. They found that several people questioned Carlson's behavior
toward young boys, but few people did anything about it.
Examples
date back to the 1970s when Carlson was a chaplain at the local jail. A
young deputy saw him rubbing young boys inappropriately at the jail,
the deputy told superiors, but no action was taken. Those superiors have
since died.
The report also states that a former Bangor police
officer once saw Carlson parked in a dark parking lot with a young boy
in his vehicle.
The report says Carlson used to have young boys
living with him, and that he once asked the Penobscot County Sheriff's
Office for child pornography as part of a research project he was doing.
State Police says their case is closed, but that if more victims want to come forward, they want to hear their stories.
State Police say their department will not file any charges in connection with this case.
