Angus King's wife, former first lady Mary Herman took a prominent role on the campaign trail. She's touting the fact that King remains a strong supporter of reproductive rights, a woman's right to choose a legal abortion and other issues she says are important to women. She claims Summers has flip-flopped on this issue.
As a congressional candidate in 2008, Summers said that abortion should always be legal but he's given more equivocal answers recently to the Bangor Daily News and Maine Public Broadcasting saying he believes abortion may be considered in cases where rape or incest occurs, or to protect the health of the mother and not with federal funding. King's wife says angus king has not changed his position...
We reached out to the other campaigns on this issue, Cynthia Dill, the democratic nominee who will attend debate says she supports reproductive rights adding: "Social security and Medicare, collective bargaining, the minimum wage, child care, health care-- all these areas loom large in the economic security of women. And all are under assault by the republican ticket.."
We repeatedly reached out to the Summers campaign for a response, and have yet to receive one, but he did tell the associated press today that he has always been pro-choice, and that the survey in the Bangor Daily News saying otherwise was quote: "in error"
By the way, Dill also missed a debate recently, citing a scheduling conflict involving her job, unlike King, neither Dill nor Summers is independently wealthy and both continue to work during this campaign, Dill as a lawyer and lecturer, and Summers as Maine's secretary of state.
