Demonstrators, including Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and Portland Mayor Michael Brennan, marched from Monument Square to the Maine State Pier.
Protesters say they're upset about a plan in the works by Enbridge Pipelines in Canada to pump tar sands through Maine via the Portland-Montreal Pipe Line, which runs near Sebago Lake and Casco Bay, though Portland-Montreal Pipe Line issued a statement Saturday, saying it has no current plans to allow pumping tar sands. However, the statement also read "(i)f there is a demand for reversing the flow in our pipeline in the future, we will consider it."
The city of Portland is considering an ordinance that would ban tar sands in the city, but after a meeting this week, the proposal went back to the drawing board. "It's going to take us a little longer to get there," said Mayor Brennan. "We need your voice that says that the future of the city and of the state is renewable energy - not tar sands."
"I on behalf of my constituents in Maine am going to ask the Obama administration to do a full review of any attempts to pump tar sands through that old pipeline," said Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.
