Heroin overdose alert fliers distributed in Portland

PORTLAND (WGME) -- The city of Portland continues to warn of two particularly dangerous types of heroin that are circulating locally. One is a dangerously strong un-cut black tar heroin that is chunky, sticky and dark brown. Another is an equally strong type of heroin often referred to as China White. It appears that this type of heroin has been cut with prescription drugs resulting in a combination that can be deadly.

Public health outreach workers are canvassing the community distributing flyers to alert the public of the risks of heroin overdose. Police say they had 4 overdoses in 4 days last week and 13 heroin-related overdoses since December 1st.

It's a problem that may just be beginning. News 13 talked with an addiction specialist  who says the drug is in every corner of the state. Doctor Mark Publicker says almost 90% of his patients are either addicted to heroin or other forms of opiates like oxycodone.Heroin overdose alert fliers distributed in Portland
