PORTLAND (WGME) -- Portland Mayor Michael Brennan is scheduled to join other city leaders and gun control activists to call on President Obama and Congress to support stricter gun control legislation at a press conference on Monday.
The event will fall one month to day after a gunman went into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT and began shooting. 26 people died at the school, including 20 children.
City leaders will unveil a new advertisement calling for gun control measures, including criminal background checks, removing high capacity weapons, and criminalizing gun trafficking.
