Waste Watch: Unemployment checks overpaid

If you're getting an unemployment check, listen up. You may be asked to pay part of it back. The government is spending billions of dollars on unemployment benefits for people who don't even qualify. News 13's Jon Chrisos shows us what the state is doing to get that money back in this Waste Watch.

Unemployed and overpaid. It's a big, and widespread, problem in the unemployment insurance system. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates an extra $14 billion was paid out during the past year. That's 11% of all the unemployment checks sent out. The percentage is even higher in Maine; more than 13%.

The DOL says the total overpayment for Maine last year more than $7 million.
DOL deputy director Kim Smith says the state has been able to collect about half of that $7 million back, but that means there's still $3.5 million to go.

Most of the money we collect is because individual pays back but when they don't, other ways, offset income tax returns or we can garnish wages

Smith says it's important to know that most benefits go to people in need who are eligible. Most improper payments are because someone was fired or quit, those who continue to file claims even though they've returned to work, and those who aren't actively looking for a job.

Unfortunately that's something that happens after the fact, people certify every week they're looking for work but they don't have to turn in documentation for a few weeks after that.

The overpayment is usually because of an administrative error by the DOL, the employer, or the worker.

U.S. Department of Labor is right in the middle of a massive effort. Encouraging states to collect that wasted money. The Maine DOL is also re-launching the state's new hire database. The information is used to see who's gone back to work and now in-eligible for benefits.
